Launching Carl Hansen & Søn

Carl Hansen opened his furniture workshop in Odense, Denmark in 1908 and soon became known for the high quality of his work. Its combination of hand craftsmanship, classic Danish design and rational series production soon became his firm’s hallmark – and continues to set it apart today.

Since forging a famous partnership with Hans J. Wegner in the late 1940s, Carl Hansen & Søn has produced some of the designer’s most timeless pieces. Hans J. Wegner designed four chairs especially for the brand in 1949 – all of which came into production and were launched in 1950. Among the first four chairs was the legendary CH24 Wishbone Chair and the beautiful CH25 easy chair with seat and back in uninterrupted paper cord – both which has been produced ever since.

Carl Hansen & Søn has since created other classical masterpieces from the period now known as Danish Modern, working with designers such as Kaare Klint, Arne Jacobsen, Ole Wanscher, Børge Mogensen and Poul Kjærholm. Most recently, the company has added modern masters like Tadao Ando and Thomas Bo Kastholm, who continue the quest for perfection that has guided over a century of Carl Hansen & Søn designs.
